Attic Insulation Decision Guide
Insulating your attic is one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient home upgrades you can make. It’s also an important step in improving the comfort of your home year-round. During the summer, it helps keep your house cool and during the winter it prevents your heating system from working overtime to heat your home.
The type of metal building insulation you choose depends on a number of factors, including the amount and location of existing insulation, space constraints, and whether you want to tackle the project yourself or hire a professional. The type of ENERGY STAR® insulation you select is important too, as higher R-values are more effective in resisting the flow of heat.
Choosing the right attic insulation is easy when you follow these steps:
1. Inspect Existing Insulation
Before you add new attic insulation, inspect your attic for proper air sealing and ventilation, as well as the presence of moisture, which can reduce its effectiveness. In addition, if your attic has access doors (such as pull-down stairs), you should insulate them to the same R-value as the rest of the attic.
2. Determine How Much Insulation You Need
The most common attic insulation is fiberglass batts, made from molten glass fibers that are wrapped around a paper backing to form rolls. This type of insulation is affordable and non-flammable, making it a good choice for many homes. However, it doesn’t offer the same level of performance as other types of attic insulation, so you may want to consider upgrading to a more effective option.
